An Effective Practice

Description

The Leon County Health Department's (LCHD) Increased Medicaid Reimbursements to Enhance Breast/Cervical Cancer Screening Project is designed to fill the service gap for under-insured or uninsured women. The program is available to women presenting with clinical findings or with a personal or family history of breast or cervical cancer who do not qualify for other screening programs. Revenue generated from increased Medicaid reimbursement is redirected to pay for mammography or Pap test services. The program provides community education, recruitment, and referral services.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among medically underserved women.

Results / Accomplishments

The original expected outcome of the project was to provide services to 50 percent of the estimated 100 ineligible women identified; however, services have been provided to 60 percent of the identified participants.

An Effective Practice meets the following HCI criteria:

  1. The program description includes at a minimum: the sponsoring organization, program goals, program implementation steps, and outcomes that have demonstrated program success and/or promise in achieving the program goal in one or more localities.
  2. The results from an evaluation of the program include quantitative measures of improvement in outcome of interest (i.e. increase in voter registration, not just delivery of voter registration drive) and/ or the outcome measure is increased or improved compared to the baseline measurement or the control group but the difference is not statistically significant.
