Youth who had a Major Depressive Episode

This indicator shows the percentage of youth ages 12 to 17 who had at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year.

Why is this important?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression is a common mental disorder affecting youth in the United States. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) defines a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) as a period of at least 2 weeks when a person experiences a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities and has a at least four other symptoms that interfere with functioning such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, and self-image. Major depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States and it is the cause of more than two-thirds of suicides every year. Treatment options for MDE include psychotherapy and medication.
