What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of people aged 12 or older who had at least one drink of alcohol during the month prior to the survey.
Why this is important:
Alcohol is the most commonly used substance in the United States. Nationally, about half of Americans aged 12 or older reported past month use of alcohol in 2006-2008. According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking at a young age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. Alcohol use also impairs judgment and can lead to other high-risk behaviors such as drunk driving and sexual activity.
Technical Note:  The regional value is compared to the Texas state value.
