Association of Rideshare-Based Transportation Services and Missed Primary Care Appointments: A Clinical Trial

A Good Idea

Description

Patients of an internal medicine practice in West Philadelphia were offered prescheduled, free Lyft rides to primary care appointments. The program was accessed using a nonrandomized trial with a comparison group (n=394 in intervention group, 392 in control group).Show rates for a 2.5-month period at the intervention practice were compared to the show rates of a similar, control practice in West Philadelphia which did not offer transportation.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the clinical trial was to evaluate the association between rideshare-based medical transportation and missed primary care appointments among Medicaid patients.

Impact

Although the uptake of ridesharing was low and did not decrease missed primary care appointments for this particular clinical trial, future studies trying to reduce missed appointments can explore alternative delivery models or target populations with stronger transportation needs.

Results / Accomplishments

Uptake of ridesharing was low among the intervention group (26.0%) and no significant difference was found between show rates among the intervention (36.5%) and control arms (36.7%).
