A Good Idea

Description

In 1998, the city of Austin, Texas utilized its Transportation Enhancement funds to build a vehicle-free bridge adjacent to the existing Lamar Boulevard Bridge. Citizens, professionals, and government agencies collaborated on the vision and design for the bridge.

The new bridge, James D. Pfluger, FAIA, Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge, was built in order to relieve traffic congestion, improve pedestrian/bicyclist safety, and enhance the overall experience of crossing the Colorado River. It was completed by 2001 and has since been accessible by foot, bicycle, stroller, and wheelchair.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the bridge project was to improve safety for pedestrians and address automobile traffic congestion on the Lamar Boulevard Bridge.

Results / Accomplishments

Individuals on both sides of the Colorado River now have a healthy and safe commute alternative to driving. The bridge has been utilized by thousands of individuals everyday.
